UAPB KNOCKS OFF LOUISIANA TECH, 5-4

UAPB defeated Louisiana Tech 5-4
Box Score RUSTON, La. (Feb. 21)  -Senior Andre Davis single in a run in the eighth and broke a 4-all tie scoring Westi Hinkel as the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff  baseball team closed its weekend series in Ruston with a 5-4 win over Louisiana Tech Sunday afternoon  at J.C. Love Field.

Davis and senior Vladimir Gomez had two hits apiece while junior Tommy Hass, sophomore Jerimiah Figueroa, junior Rashawn Tillman, senior Jose Hernandez, junior Westi Hinkel and senior Josh Cassidy each had one hit to lead UAPB offense.  All SWAC selection Kevin Walsh (1-0) also earned the win on the mound, pitching 1.2 innings with three strikeouts and no Bulldogs hits and Medina Humberto picking up his first save of the season.

The Golden Lions trailed 3-2 heading into the top of the seventh when Figueroa reached first on an error by the shortstop.  He scampered home on Davis double in the gap in center.  Gomez comes up single to the right side moving Davis to third, but Gomez would advance to second scoring Davis on a throwing error by the pitcher to give UAPB a 4-3 lead in the game.   

Louisiana Tech tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a wild pitch scoring Bre'shon Kimbell, who reached base on a fielding error advancing to second and third.  UAPB would get out of trouble retiring the next two batters to get out the inning. 

UAPB would come up big in the bottom of the eighth inning, with Hinkel leading off with a single to short stop, follow by Coach Carlos James making a team decision pinch hitting Hernandez, who single to right advancing Hinkel to second.  Figueroa would reach on a fielder choice advancing the lead runner to third before Davis would be the clutch man driving a hard shot single up the middle to give the Golden Lions the lead for good.

Junior Medina Humberto struck out three in 2.0 innings of relief, while teammate Kevin Walsh picked up the win pitching 1.2 innings and did not allow a run while striking out three batters. Junior Charles Bahn allowed five hits and two runs in a 4.1-inning start.

UAPB would out hit Louisiana Tech two straight games 12-5 in game two and 10-8 in game three.  Laetten Galbraith (1-2) would take the loss for the Bulldogs.

UAPB will play Central Baptist College Tuesday (Feb. 25) 3 p.m. and Le Moyne-Owens College Wednesday (Feb. 26) at 3p.m., both game will be played at Taylor Field.
