Box Score LAKE CHARLES, La. (Feb. 13) - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Baseball team fell to the McNeese State in their season opener as the Cowboys defeated the Golden Lions, 6-5 here Friday night at Cowboy Diamond Stadium.
UAPB finished the contest with five hits, whereas MCN garnered 10.
Both
Jose Hernandez and
Vladimir Gomez finished with two hits each to lead the Golden Lions, while MCN had three Cowboys to finish with two hits each in James Cantu, Billy Sommers, and Cameron Toole.
Kaleb Fontenot (1-0) picked up the win for MCN, allowing three hits, one earned run and striking out eight in the 25 batters he faced. Cole Prejean and Collin Kober also saw action on the mound for the Cowboys with Prejean pitching one and two-third innings allowing two hits and two earned runs in the eight batters he faced and Colin picking up the save pitching one and one-third inning and striking out two batters in the five batters he faced.
Billy Olson (0-1) received the loss for the UAPB as he pitched four innings, allowing six hits, three earned runs and striking out three in the 20 batters he faced. The Golden Lions also had four more pitchers to take the mound for UAPB in
Skyler Henson, Ciji Ramos,
Jerimiah Figueroa and
Kevin Walsh.
UAPB grabbed the early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning with Hernandez scoring on an
Andre Davis ground out to second, followed by a Gomez single scoring Robert Colon.
MCN tied the contest at 2-2 as the Cowboys pushed a across a run in the first inning and another in the second.
UAPB reclaimed the lead in the top of the third inning with a Gomez sacrifice fly to right field scoring Hernandez, giving the Golden Lions a 3-2 lead.
MCN regained the lead as they score a two runs in their half of the fourth and sixth innings to take a 6-3 lead.
UAPB plated two more runs in the top of the eighth innings with Colon scoring on a MCN double play and Davis scoring on a Cassidy single to right field, for the 6-5 finale.
