Pine Bluff, AR. -- Karissa Fenwick fourth goal of the season ended up being the game-winner for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women's soccer team Sunday. The Lady Lions picked up their third consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference win of the season by holding off Alabama St. 2-1 at Pumphrey Stadium.
It was the second consecutive win at home for UAPB, which is now a perfect 2-0-0 on its home pitch, as well as (4-6, 3-1 SWAC) overall for the season. The Lady Hornets fell to 2-8-1 overall and 0-2-0 in SWAC play.
Freshman Rebecca Holmes notched her third goal of the season to give the Lady Lions a 1-0 lead early in the first half. Holmes played in an assist from Maria Rios Jean past Alabama St. keeper Kile Powell in the 22nd minute.
Almost immediately after UAPB took the lead, the Lady Hornets Shelbi Hallam slotted in a goal to tie the game at 1-1, in the 25th minute.
With twenty nine minutes left in regulation, Fenwick received the ball from Rebecca Holmes, made a move through the Alabama St. defense, and slid it past the Lady Hornets goalkeeper. Contribute to the game winning goal, was Holmes first assist of the game and was the third in her career.
UAPB had a 15-11 advantage in shots. The Lady Lions put eight shots on goal, compared to Hornets six. The teams combined for 26 shots in the match up, but both teams were tied in corner kicks at 2-2.
Makayla Cowles made five saves for UAPB in the victory. Cowles stopped three Hornets opportunities in the second half.
The Lady Lions will travel to Lorman, Mississippi to take on Alcorn St. on Friday, Oct. 9 at 4 p.m., followed by a tilt with Mississippi Valley on Sunday, Oct. 11 at 1 p.m.
