Box Score BATON ROUGE, La. (Sept. 23) - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Volleyball Team picked up their first Southwestern Athletic Conference of the season as they rallied in the final set for 3-2 (25-22, 25-17, 12-25, 21-25, 17-15) win over Southern University, here Monday night at the Cliford Seymour Gymnasium.
In a nip and tuck first set, UAPB tied the set at 20-20 on a
Courtney Billups kill. Then recorded two quick scores on SU attack error and an
Ashlie Jones kill to take a 22-20.
UAPB pulled away to win the first set 25-21 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set the Lady Lions never trailed as they enjoyed leads by much six point as they won the set 25-17 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
SU cut UAPB's lead to 2-1 in the match as the Jaguars won the third set 25-12.
The Jaguars tied the match at 2-2 as they won the fourth set 25-21. SU led by many as eight points in the set. But UAPB would erase an eight point deficient with a 7-2 run to cut SU's lead to 23-21.
SU won the set on a kill by Melodie Malone and a service ace by Diamond William for the 25-23 win.
In the fifth and final set, SU jumped out to a 6-2 lead capped off by an UAPB attack error.
The Lady Lions battled back to tie the set at 13-13 on a Jaguar attack error, capping a 6-1 run by UAPB. SU tied the set at 15-15 on a kill by Malone.
UAPB then took advantage of a SU service error and
Kayla Dowdell kill to the win the set 17-15 and win the match 3-2.
UAPB (2-12, 1-0 SWAC) was led by Jones as she finished the contest with a double-double with 13 kills and 17 digs.
Jordan Foyer finished the contest with a 37 assists, while
Jade Sanlin recorded 16 digs on the night.
SU (2-9, 0-1 SWAC) had three Jaguars to finish in double-digit kills with Marisol Macias finishing with a team high 15 kills, followed by both Leila Lealaimatafao and Shauntia Carr with 12 kills apiece, Phalen Clark led the team in assists with 47, whereas Williams led the team in digs with 28.
The Lady Lions will return to action on Thursday, September 25 as they will travel to Itta Bena, Miss., to take on Mississippi Valley State in a 6 p.m. start.
