Baseball: Doughtery grand slams downs UAPB

PRAIRIE, Texas (April 5) - Prairie View A&M scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth  to avoid the sweep by the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Baseball team as the Panthers defeated the Golden Lions, 5-1 here Saturday afternoon at Prairie View Baseball Stadium.
 
UAPB (10-21, 10-4 SWAC) recorded game high 13 hits in the contest with three Golden Lions finishing the contest with two hits each, whereas PVAMU recorded six hits with Grant Dougherty going two-for-three from the plate to lead the Panthers.
 
Jordan Stewart (1-2) received the win for the PVAMU as he pitched one-third of an inning in relief.  Chadd Flick, the Panther starter toed the mound for five complete innings, allowing eight hits, and striking out two in the 21 batters he faced.  Also making an appearance on the mound for PVAMU was Charles Philpot, who pitched three and two-third innings, allowing five hits, one earned runs and striking out three in the 17 batters he faced.
 
Humberto Zavala (0-2) received the loss as he gave up one hit and two earned runs in the two batters he faced.  Kyle Schwartz, the UAPB starter recorded seven innings on the mound, allowing four hits, one earned run and striking out four in the 26 batters he faced, while Samuel Olson toed the mound for one innings, allowing one hit, two earned runs and striking out one in the six batters he faced.
 
In the bottom of the ninth three straight walks to load the bases would set the stage for Doughtery as he would end the game with a grand slam.
 
The Panthers took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with Dominique Harris scoring on a Greg Salicido ground out to second base.
 
UAPB tied the contest at 1-1 in the top of the seventh inning Jose Hernandez scoring on a Tyler Oertle single.
