Women's Basketball: Mississippi Valley State edges UAPB, 68-67 in overtime win

Box Score PINE BLUFF, Ark. (March 8) - The University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Women's Basketball team dropped a 68-67 heartbreaker in overtime to Mississippi Valley State in regular season finale, here Saturday afternoon at the H.O. Clemmons Arena.

In the second half, MVSU used a 16-10 run to tie the contest at 59-59, to send the game into overtime on a Jasmyne Sanders put back with 37 left in regulation.

A three-point play by Destiny Ham gave the Lady Lions, a 64-63 lead with 3:27 left in the overtime period.

Christina Lasane would tie the contest at 67-67 with a Lady Lions three point play with 1:40 left in the overtime stanza.

Christina Reed would give the Devilettes the 68-67 win as she connected a free throw with seven seconds left in the overtime period.

The Lady Lions would close out the first half with an 8-3 run to take a 26-18 lead into the break.

UAPB finished first half shooting 35.7 percent (10-of-28), where as MVSU shot 22.2 percent (8-of-36).


In the first half, UAPB grabbed the early 10-4 lead on a Cassidy Wright jumper with 12:44 left in the first.

UAPB (3-25, 2-16 SWAC) was paced by a Christina Lasane as she scored a game high 20 points to lead all scorers, while Carlisha Walker finished with 15. Marion Thompson led the Lady Lions on the boards with eight.

MVSU (9-20, 8-10 SWAC) had three Devilettes to score in double-figures led b Sanders with a team high 17 points. Ashley Beal added 15, while A'Shanti Weathers pumped in 11 for MVSU. Sanders led the Devilettes on the boards with seven.

With the loss, the Lady Lions earns the No. 11 seed in the 2014 Southwestern Athletic Conference and will face No. 7 seed Grambling State on Tuesday, March 11 at 2:30 p.m. at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.
