Baseball: Texas Southern holds off UAPB for 9-8 win in extra innings

Box Score PINE BLUFF, Ark. ( March 30)  - The University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Baseball team late innings heroics, were not enough to hold off Texas Southern as the Tigers held on for a 9-8 win over the Golden Lions in 10 innings of play, here Sunday afternoon at the Torii Hunter Baseball/Softball Little League Complex.

With the loss, UAPB holds on to a one-game lead over TSU in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Western Division. 
UAPB (8-19, 8-3 SWAC) recorded eight hits in the contest with Isias Alcantar going two-for-three from the plate, scoring one run and driving in two runs to lead the Golden Lions.

TSU (10-16, 7-3 SWAC) tallied 13 hits with Jerry Ford going four-for-five from the plate, scoring one run and driving in one run to lead the Tigers.

Larry Romero (1-1) got the win for Tigers as he pitched two and one-third inning in relief, allowing five hits, three earned runs and striking out three, while Rios Ryan (1) got the save as he pitched two-third scoreless innings in the four batters he faced.  Michael Starkey, the TSU starter went six innings, allowing three hits, and striking out four in the 26 batters he faced.
Jaron Gold (0-1) received the loss for the Golden Lions as he gave up two hits and three earned runs in his appearance on the mound.  Kyle Schwartz, the UAPB start went six and one-third innings, allowing six hits and striking out five in the 26 batters he faced.
 
Tyler Oertle gave the Golden Lions a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a single up the middle scoring both Andre Davis and Mike Wieland.
 
A Zach Welz's single to left center scoring Ford, cut UAPB's lead to 2-1.
 
TSU tied the contest at 2-2 in the top of the seventh inning as Robert Garza scored on a Samuel Terry sacrifice fly to center.
 
The Tigers broke the 2-2 tie in the top of the eighth inning as both Welz and Ford scored on a Tyler Edwards' single to first base, giving TSU a 4-2 lead. 
 
UAPB reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning as they plated three runs on an Alcantar single up the middle scoring Campbell, followed by a Rashawn Tillman bases loaded walk scoring Davis and then Jordan Haas would single to center field scoring Alcantar, giving the Golden Lions a 5-4 lead.

TSU tied the contest at 5-5 in the top of ninth inning to send the game into extra innings as Ford singled to right field scoring Marquis Webb.
 
The Tigers would plate four runs in their half of the 10th inning to take a 9-5 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning.
In the bottom of the 10th inning, UAPB would load the bases on back-to-back-to-back hits by Hass, Vladimir Gomez and Wieland.   Eddie Martinez pushed across the Golden Lions' first run in the inning with a bases load walk, scoring Hass.  Then Gomez would score on an Alcantar bases loaded hit-by-pitch, followed by an Oertle's fielder's choice scoring Wieland, for the 9-8 finale.
