Box Score BATON ROUGE, La. (Nov. 22) - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Volleyball team went into survival mode as they defeated Texas Southern, 3-2 (25-18, 21-25, 25-13, 17-25, 15-12) in a Southwestern Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament elimination match here Saturday night at the Clifford Seymour Gymnasium.
UAPB in the first set, the Lady Lions opened the first set with a 15-8 lead on a
Lauren Corby kill. The Lady Lions extended their lead to 20-13 on a
Whitney Harris kill as UAPB won the set 25-18 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, TSU took an 11-5 lead in the early part of the set.
UAPB rallied in the set to take a 17-15 lead as they used a 12-6 run, capped off by a pair of blocks by Harris and
Courtney Billups.
TSU would counter with a rally of their own to win the set 25-21 as they Lady Tigers used a 10-4 run, capped off by an UAPB attack error, tying the match at 1-1.
UAPB regrouped in the third set as they jumped out to a 10-5 lead, capped off by a Harris service ace. The Lady Lions extended their lead to 19-10 on a kill by
Ashlie Jones as UAPB went on to win the set 25-13 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Lady Tigers tied the match at 2-2 as they won the fourth set 25-17.
In the fifth and final set UAPB grabbed an early 5-1 lead, capped off by a
Lauren Corby kill.
UAPB was first to reach eight-point mark on a kill by Harris right before each team switched sides.
TSU's Robyn Shannon tied the set at 11-11 as that would be third tie of the set.
The Lady Lions ended the set with a 3-1 run, capped off by an
Ayanna Parker kill, giving UAPB the 3-2 win.
UAPB (12-18) had a trio of Lady Lions to finish in double-digit kills with Harris leading the way with a team high 15 kills, followed by both Jones and Corby as they finished with 10 kills apiece for the Lady Lions.
Jordan Foyer led team in assists and digs with 37 assists and 12 kills.
TSU (12-18) was led by Shannon with 15 kills, followed by Audriana Carson with 11. Both Hillary Washington and Mallory Ozuna finished the contest with 12 assists apiece to lead the Lady Tigers, while Ashle Markey finished the contest with 28 digs.
With the win UAPB advances to face Alabama State on Sunday, November 23 in an SWAC Tourney elimination game.
