Box Score BATON ROUGE, La. (Nov. 22) - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Volleyball team starved off elimination with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-19) win over Alcorn State, here Saturday afternoon at Clifford Seymour Gymnasium on the campus of Southern University.
UAPB took an early 10-6 lead in the first set, capped off by a
Lauren Corby kill.
The Lady Lions extended their lead to 20-13 with a 10-5 run capped off by a
Whitney Harris kill as UAPB went on to win the set 25-14 to take a 1-0 lead in the set.
ASU jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the second set capped off by an UAPB service error.
UAPB used a 12-4 run to take a 17-13 lead, capped off by an ASU attack error.
The Lady Braves closed the gap to 22-20 on a Heather Jackson kill, capping a 7-5 run by the Lady Braves.
But that would be closes that ASU would get as the Lady Lions went to win the set 25-21 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, ASU jumped out to a 4-1 lead on a kill by Katelyn Quirin.
UAPB tied the set at 5-5 with a 4-1 run, capped off by an ASU attack error.
The Lady Lions made the score 20-13 on a Lady Braves attack error, capping a 15-8 run by the Lady Lions as UAPB went on to win the set 25-19 and the match 3-0.
UAPB (11-19) had three lady Lions to finish with seven kills apiece in
Ashlie Jones, Harris and Valiyah Jones.
Jordan Foyer led the team in assists with 28, while
Courtney Brand led the team in digs.
ASU (8-20) was led by Jackson with seven kills, followed by Lurlethia Jones with six, while Sydney Mellorn led the team in assists with 18. Vanessa Ortega led team in digs with 13.
Win the UAPB advances in the loser's bracket and will take on Texas Southern in the nightcap of the 2014 SWAC Volleyball Tournament.
