Box Score ALCORN STATE, Miss. (Nov. 15) - Alcorn State hands the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Football team, a 56-6 loss in the Golden Lions final road contest of the season, here Saturday afternoon at Jack Spinks –Mario Casem Stadium.
Alcorn State struck first blood in the contest as Devon Francois intercepted a pass for touchdown from 28 yards out giving the Braves, a 7-0 lead with 13:18 left in the first quarter.
The Braves added to their lead on an Arron Baker two-yard TD run with 3:07 left in the quarter, capping a 12-play, 96-yard drive by the Braves.
ASU opened the second quarter with an 11-play, 80-yard drive as they scored on a John Gibbs' 10-yard TD pass to Brandon Campbell with 7:35 left in the half, giving the Braves a 21-0 lead.
Willie Yong put the Golden Lions on the board as he scored on an 11-yard reception from
Benjamin Anderson with 1:31 left in the half, cutting Alcorn State's lead to 21-6 as the Braves blocked the PAT.
Alcorn State closed out the first half as John Gibbs recorded his second TD pass of the game with a 12-yard pass to Norlando Veals with six seconds left in the half with UAPB going into the break trailing ASU, 28-6.
The Braves defense held the Golden Lions scoreless in the second half as Alcorn State scored four TDs for the 56-6.
Brian Handley led UAPB's ground attach as he rushed for 134 yards on 24 carries with his longest rush being for 24 yards.
Benjamin Anderson finished the contest with 152 yards through the air as he completed 11 passes in 23 attempts with one TD and two interceptions.
Young led the Golden Lion receivers with 65 yards on three receptions and one TD.
Willie Duncan led the UAPB defense with 14 total tackles and one sack, followed by Kevin Rucker with nine tackles.
Alcorn State's ground attack was led by their quarterback John Gibbs, Jr., with 75 yards on seven carries, followed by Baker with 55 yards on eight carries and three TDs.
Gibbs through the air passed for 200 yards by completing 15 passes in 19 attempts with three passing TDs.
Three different ASU receivers finished with a TD as Hughes, Campbell and Billy Shed all finished with a TD each for the Braves. Jordan Payne led ASU in receptions with three catches for 45, followed by Hughes with two receptions for 48 yards.
Francois led the Braves defense with eight tackles and one interception, followed by Desmond Stevenson with seven tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
The loss drops UAPB to 3-7 and 2-6 in conference play, while Alcorn State raises their record to 9-2 and 7-1 in conference play.
UAPB will return to action on Saturday, November 22 as the Golden Lions will host Alabama A&M in their annual senior and church day game at Golden Lion Stadium in a 2:30 p.m. start.
