Fort Worth, Tex. – The championship run the 2013 SWAC Baseball Coach of the Year
Carlos James envisioned for his University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Golden Lions baseball team was cut short by the bats of the Texas Southern Tigers, 6-5.
The Golden Lions got on the board in the first inning when
Cody De Mera came around to score on a
Mike Wieland single. UAPB added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning, before TSU would blast open their half of the fourth with five runs on five hits and two errors; to take a 5-3 lead going into the fifth.
UAPB would fight back to tie the game at five with two runs, when
Isias Alcantar, the SWAC Player of the Year, hit a two run homerun but the Golden Lions could manage to pull off the comeback victory. The Tigers would add one more run in the bottom of the seventh, to finish the game off 6-5.
De Mera and
Kirby Campbell both had two hits apiece, as the Golden Lions had seven hits as a team. Both squads had four errors in today's contest. The Golden Lions
Redmond Floyd suffered the loss today, as this loss brings the Golden Lions 2013 season to an end.
This has definitely been a season full of milestones cut short; 20- plus wins, a winning record at home, a pitching staff that boasted the conference's best era and the coach and player of the year in the SWAC can all be attributes that the Golden Lions can hang their hats on.
