Pine Bluff, Ark. – Clear skies prevailed over the Torri Hunter Baseball Complex on the campus of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, as head coach
Carlos James and his staff along with Athletics Director Lonza Hardy, Jr., honored three Golden Lions seniors;
Cody De Mera,
Stanten Jones, and
Jacob Whitney.
After a brief ceremony held at the pitcher's mound, the Golden Lions went back to business as they looked to sweep the SWAC western division weekend series against the Tigers of Texas Southern.
TSU was able to hold on for the 4-2 victory, although the Golden Lions were on verge of making a late inning comeback, just as they did on Saturday. With the score reading 3-2 heading into the ninth inning, the Tigers managed one more run to extend their lead for today' final.
Both clubs put up a run in the first frame, the Golden Lions run came when De Mera was brought in off a sacrifice fly by
Kirby Campbell. TSU would post two more runs in the top half of the fourth, only to be answered back by the Golden Lions in their half, when
Warren Stehn plated a run on ground out by
Dylan Calhoun.
Each team managed seven hits, but some crucial errors proved to be the difference down the stretch. Stehn was the man at the plate for UAPB going 2-for-4, with one run scored.
Kyle Schwartz suffered his fifth loss of the season, going 8 2/3 innings, striking out two in the process.
Up next for the Golden Lions is a two day mid-week match-up against the visiting Racers of Murray State. Tuesday's first pitch is set for 3:30 PM, with Wednesday match set for 1:00 PM.
