Grambling, La. – The Golden Lions offense wasn't done just yet from the previous game with Grambling Tigers Baseball team at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex Sunday April 14
th, same results but different location.
UAPB Golden Lions Baseball team let their bats do the talking in a 15-5 defeat over the Grambling Tigers in 8 innings. The two ball clubs had just previous played each other last weekend with UAPB winning the rubber match 8-5 in the 2
nd series.
Game three of the first series which was schedule to be played on March 10
th but was postpone in the top of the fourth inning due to bad weather. In a game that was schedule for 9:00am before mother nature arrived, Grambling jump on the scoreboard first claiming a 3-0 lead on a three run home run by GSU Darren Farmer, followed by a triple by Elias Todman & a single by Hector Mejias making the score 4-0 in the first inning. The Golden Lions bounced back in the top of the third with a two run home run by
Patrick Phillips making the score 4-2.
Grambling scored one run in the bottom of the third before UAPB took the lead in the fourth inning with the help of Phillips and Cody Demara both contributed double to make the score 6-5 as the rain force the game to be postpone.
When the game was resumed the Golden Lions went with a different pitcher Mickey Ramirez who relived
Kyle Schwartz from the previous meeting who struck out four and gave up five runs in three innings. Ramirez was the winning pitcher (2-3) going five innings, giving up six hits, no runs, & striking out five to close the game.
The UAPB offense wasn't done yet, in the sixth inning the Golden Lions added three more run with the bases loaded, walking
Dwayne Hysmith and scoring
Kirby Campbell.
Dylan Calhoun connected on an outside pitch hitting a single that scored
Mike Wieland and
Isias Alcantar making the score 9-5.
The Golden Lions defense also played a major role in this victory. In the bottom of the sixth with bases loaded and one out, a hard ground ball was hit to third base
Patrick Phillips who made a good scoop and turned a ground ball into your basic five-four-three double play to end the inning. The Golden Lions added three more runs in the seventh and eighth inning to end the game on a 10 run rule to clinch the first series between the two teams. Phillips led the way for the Golden Lions going 3-for-5 with two RBI's, four runs scored and a two run home run. Calhoun and De Mera each had three hits apiece to help lead the way also.
UAPB who is tied for first in the SWAC's western division, will take on Mississippi Valley Tuesday April 16
th in Itta Bena, MS, 3 pm and will be back home in Conference play against Alcorn St. April 23
rd at The Torii Hunter Baseball Complex 3 PM.
