Golden Lions Scalp Braves

Box Score Lorman, Miss- On Wednesday, in SWAC baseball action, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Golden Lions made a stop on the reservation for nine innings with the Alcorn State University Braves in a midweek match-up. ASU put up two runs early in the first inning and one more in their half of the second, before UAPB would take over the ball game and turn in 10 runs on 11 hits for a 10-3 final.

The Golden Lions recorded three runs on four hits in the top half of the third inning to tie the ballgame. Both Patrick Phillips and Cody De Mera reached base on singles; after Mike Wieland was hit by a pitch, Isias Alcantar's single drove in Phillips and De Mara for runs one and two. Kirby Campbell also singled in his visit to plate that brought home Wieland for run number three.

UAPB went unmatched throughout the next six innings outscoring ASU, 7-0, en route to victory.

In the fifth inning, the Golden Lions scored four more runs but had zero hits. With four walks, two hit batsmen, an error, and a sacrifice fly UAPB took a 7-3 lead. Then in the sixth inning, Wieland, after reaching on a walk, crossed home for the eighth run.

Wieland seemed to be the catalyst for the Golden Lion offense today; a ninth inning double would drive in Dwayne Hysmith and Phillips for runs 10 and 11. On the day, Wieland was 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBI's.  Alcantar also did a job for the Golden Lions today going 3-for-5 with one run and two RBI's.

The Golden Lions pitching staff combined to hold the Braves to only five hits, while striking out six batters.  Despite 10 UAPB batters striking out, they still managed eleven hits.

Next on deck for the Golden Lions, is a SWAC western division weekend series with the Panthers of Prairie View A&M University. A Saturday double header with a wrap-up game on Sunday is subject to schedule change based on weekend weather conditions.
