PINE BLUFF, Ark. - On Saturday, the Golden Lions split a double-header with Grambling State University by scores of 6-5 and 7-6, respectively.
In Game 1, Grambling State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on JR/LHP Jim Ploeger, but after SR Cody De Mera's 2 RBI, homerun, the lead was cut to 3-2. After getting through the line-up one time, Ploeger would settle in for the next few innings putting up zeros in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.
In the top of the 7th, JR Rafael Soto would single to right with one out, and after a pop-up out, FR Dylan Calhoun would double to left field advancing Soto to third base. With two-outs and runners on second and third, JR Tyler Oertle would pick-up a 2 RBI, single scoring both Soto and Calhoun. Oertle would then steal second and score on an RBI, double by JR Mike Wieland. With the Golden Lions up by a score of 6-3, the Tigers would take advantage of two base hits and an errant throw by Ploeger to eventually go up 6-5.
In the top of the 9th, UAPB would load the bases with two outs but reliever Cory Jordan would get SR Jake Whitney to pop-up for the final out.
Thirty minutes following the completion of Game 1, Game 2 began with the Golden Lions jumping out to an early 4-0 lead highlighted by Alcantar's second homerun of the season. With a four run deficit, Grambling would score three runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning off of JR Mikey Ramirez. After two quick outs, Ramirez would walk the next batter then give-up a single followed by a 3-run homerun to make the score 4-3.
In the top of the 5th, JR Dwayne Hysmith would pick-up an RBI, single to extend the Golden Lions' lead to 5-3. Grambling would answer in the bottom of the 7th with a single run of its own to make the score 5-4.
In the top of the 8th, SO Wilton Guzman would pick-up two keys RBIs with a single to center scoring Soto and FR Michael Ludwig. After one out in the bottom of the 8th, Ramirez would hand the ball over to JR Andrew Buehler to close out the inning with UAPB up by a score of 7-4.
Following a quick 1-2-3 top of the 9th, Grambling would threaten in the bottom of the inning, but JR Jaron Gold would come in relief for Buehler and close the game with a groundout to De Mera and a 7-6 Golden Lions' victory.
With both teams currently 2-3 in conference play, the rubber-match for this 3-game series is scheduled for Sunday at 9:00 am.
