PINE BLUFF -- The UAPB volleyball team got off the deck after trailing 2-1 to beat Southern 3-2 on Monday night. With the win, the Lady Lions moved back into third place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Western Division at 4-4, 11-21 overall. Meanwhile, Southern slipped a half game behind the Lady Lions at 3-4 (6-17).
Ayanna Parker led the way for UAPB with 18 kills and nine digs. Rachel Hornbuckle hit .558 for the match and finished with 10 kills on 17 attempts with no errors. Jordan Foyer added 37 assists and 11 digs, while two other players had double-digit digs. Ashlie Jones had a team-high 17 digs, while Courtney Brand tallied 13.
Leila Lealaimatafao paced Southern with 10 kills. Phalan Clark had a double-double with 18 assists and 14 digs. Chanda Journet contributed 11 assists, while Diamond Williams was the top defender with 16 digs.
The teams took turns controlling the match. Of the five sets, only one was really close. UAPB struck first with a 25-15 win in the opening set. But, SU rebounded to take the next two sets 25-19 and 25-16. With their backs against the wall, the Lady Lions rolled to a 25-14 win in the fourth set.
In the final set, UAPB trailed twice at 3-2 and 10-9. However, the Lady Lions scored six of the final seven points to close out the match.
Having locked up no worse than third in the SWAC Western Division, the Lady Lions finish off the regular season on Veterans Day with a non-conference match vs. Arkansas-Monticello.
