JACKSON, Miss. -- The Lady Lions battled back from an 0-2 deficit, but ran out of steam as Jackson State ended their tournament run with a 3-2 win in the quarterfinals of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) volleyball tournament at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center. UAPB ended the season at 13-23, while JSU (10-20) kept alive their chances of a winning a third straight tournament title.
The Lady Lions had defeated JSU earlier in the day, sending the Tigers into the elimination bracket. After the first two sets, it looked like the Lady Tigers would exact revenge and broom UAPB out the door quickly. But, the Lady Lions refused to go away without a fight.
JSU won the first two sets 25-21 and 25-23. But, UAPB punished the Lady Tigers in the third set 25-9, then took the fourth set 25-17.
JSU rolled out of the gates in the final set, leading 8-2 at the halfway mark. The Lady Lions were never able to mount a threat. JSU went on to close out the Lady Lions season with a 15-7 win.
Rachel Hornbuckle had 11 kills to lead UAPB. Ayanna Parker and Audrey Sherles each finished with nine kills. Jordan Foyer added 32 assists, while Courtney Brand had 20 digs.
Paige Williams topped JSU with 11 kills, while Mikayla Rolle tallied 10.
Alabama State 3, UAPB 1
UAPB fell into the elimination bracket with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-22 and 25-18) loss to Eastern Division top seed Alabama State. ASU (23-14) extended its winning streak to seven games, including the 2013 regular season.
Whitney Harris and Rachel Hornbuckle led UAPB with 12 kills apiece. Jordan Foyer posted a team high of 41 assists. The Lady Lions had 60 digs for the match with Courtney Brand leading the way with 16.
Rachel Smith paced ASU with a double-double, finishing with 14 kills and 16 digs. Brooke Beasley also posted a double-double she tallied 33 assists and 15 digs.
Tiara Kelley registered 12 kills and Ellyn Jones totaled 17 assists for Lady Hornets. Luiza Griz contributed 13 digs to push ASU ahead.
UAPB 3, Jackson State 1
The Lady Lions made some history on Saturday morning advancing to the winners bracket, beating two-time defending champion Jackson State 3-1. 18-25, 27-25. It was the first time in the program's history that the Lady Lions won their opening match of the tournament.
Ashlie Jones and Jordan Foyer both finished with double-doubles. Jones recorded 11 kills and 10 digs for Lady Lions, while Foyer contributed a game high 40 assists and 10 digs.
Ayanna Parker led the team with 12 kills and eight digs. Courtney Brand led the defense with 13 digs. She also had five service aces.
Jenna Siddiui led JSU with 39 assists and 16 digs. Mikayla Rolle led the offense with 14 kills while hitting .308. Paige Williams and Kennede Banks had nine kills apiece, while Jasmine Knight tallied 10 digs.
UAPB won the first two sets 25-23, 25-21. JSU came back to win the third set 25-18, but UAPB iced the match with a 27-25 win in the fourth set.
