Volleyball: Lady Lions Edge Southern in Five Sets to Even SWAC Record

BATON ROUGE -- The UAPB Lady Lions evened their Southwestern Athletic Conference record at 2-2 with a five-set win over Southern in classic slugfest on Monday night. UAPB also improved to 8-18, while SU fell to 4-14 and 1-1 in the SWAC.

Three Lady Lions had double-digit kills in the match. Ashlie Jones led the way with 16 kills, 13 digs and six aces. Ayanna Parker added 14 kills and 17 digs, while Whitney Harris finished with 10 kills. Jordan Foyer also had a double-double with 43 assists and 15 digs. Meanwhile, Courtney Brand rolled up 23 digs. Rachel Tims also had double-digit digs with 12.

Phalen Clark led Southern with 16 kills, 23 assists and 12 digs. Deyshia Burden added 11 kills, Michelle Williams added 11 digs and Chanda Journet tallied 12 assists.

All of the sets, with the exception of one was decided by less than three points. Southern won the first set 25-22, but UAPB answered with a 25-22 win in set two. Then, the Lady Lions rolled to a 25-16 win in the third set to take a 2-1 match lead. However, Southern rebounded to outlast UAPB in the fourth set 26-24 to force the deciding set.

The Lady Lions were in a quick 5-1 before rallying to tie the set at 8-8. A kill by Audrey Sherles and an attack error by SU gave UAPB their first lead of the set at 10-8. The Jaguars scored three straight points to reclaim the lead at 11-10.

Back came UAPB with four unanswered to get to set point at 14-11. But, the Lady Lions couldn't put the match away. SU rallied with three straight to tie the set at 14-14. However, back-to-back errors by the Jaguars ended the battle as UAPB won 16-14.

The Lady Lions will be off the rest of the week, then return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 23 on the road against Arkansas State. Then, they return home on Oct. 24 to face Henderson State in a non-conference match.
