Box Score Little Rock, AR- In spite of inclement weather the Golden Lions manage to play hard to pull out a fourth quarter nail bitter in the Delta Classic 4 Literacy. Although the game started under clear skies, Mother Nature also bought a ticket to the game.
The Golden Lions showed they could move the ball down the field setting up
Tyler Strickland for a 36- yard field goal attempt which he missed wide left at the 11 minute mark of the first quarter. The Golden Lions then worked through three straight possessions before they were able the reach pay dirt. Second year man Ben Anderson combined with
Dennis Jenkins on a 19 yard option scamper for the game's first score.
Langston answered the call right back, scoring from 38 yards out at the four minute mark of the second quarter. Not to be outdone, the Golden Lions found the end zone yet again when Anderson found
Dezmond Beverly for a 33 yard strike. That would take the Golden Lions into halftime with a 14-7 lead.
Both teams went on a scoring drought in third quarter; Langston managed to tie the ballgame up with a 10 play, 80 yard drive in the fourth quarter. UAPB got the ball back late in the game on a fumble recovery deep in their own territory; that led to a game winning field goal by first year kicker Strickland, who was looking for redemption from the miss in the first quarter.
Defensively, the Golden Lions were led by senior linebacker
Bill Ross with 10 tackles. Defensive end
Brandon Thurmond chipped in two sacks, while
David Watson had the game's only interception. Next up for the Golden Lions will be a home contest against Alabama A&M on September 10.
