Lady Lions take MS State Bulldogs to Sudden Death Overtime

Lady Lions prepare for a corner kick near the Bulldogs goal.
STARKVILLE, MS – The Lady Lions nearly sent the Bulldogs to the doghouse tonight as they played their best game of the season. UAPB took MSU to overtime in dramatic fashion under the Friday night lights at the MSU soccer field.

The first half was an even match. The Lady Lions defense held strong as they kept the Bulldogs to six shots in the first half. But the UAPB forwards had their chances at goal too by getting three shots on goal and two corner kicks. The score was tied 0-0 going into halftime.

The second half proved to be a much more exciting battle as both teams fought hard for control of the game. The Lady Lions opened up the half with their best performance coming out of halftime so far this year.

“The girls came out ready to play hard after halftime. They believed that they could win the game and they played like they had something to prove to themselves,” said Coach Mazza
.

The Lady Lions did prove to themselves that they can compete with an SEC team. Six corners were tallied in UAPB's favor in the second half and they high pressured MSU to keep the ball in their end. The midfield worked hard to win balls in the air and send it up to the forwards. At one point in the second half, Silvia Fuentes, a senior forward, had a great shot from inside the eighteen that sailed just over the crossbar.

“We played like a team tonight and that's why I am so proud of us. We did not give up and we proved to ourselves that we have what it takes to make a strong statement in the SWAC,” said Fuentes.

Perhaps the most important contribution to the game for UAPB came from the star performance by sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Wood. Wood made five saves in the game including a game saver that found her diving low to the left corner and a leaping save off a MSU free kick.

“I thought that I played well tonight. Making those big saves felt really good and got my team pumped up. I am happy that I was able to perform so well for my teammates because they were battling out there,” said Wood.

The second half ended a 0-0 tie and both teams were headed into sudden death overtime. MSU came out strong and pressured UAPB by taking five shots on goal. UAPB totaled 11 shots and 8 corner kicks in the game.

MSU was able to get on the scoreboard at the 98th minute. The goal was scored after a rebound from a hard shot that Wood blocked but could not handle. Madison Mckee
was there to put the ball in the back of the net for the Bulldogs.

“I am proud of the way the team came out to played tonight and we really stepped it up compared to our last game. We were positive on the field and coming off the bench. And we played like a team that will fight for each other,” says senior captain Rachel Harker
.

The Lady Lions will stay in Starkville and will face the Golden Eagles of the University of Southern Mississippi Sunday at 11AM at MSU soccer field.
