PINE BLUFF, Ark.-University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Head Baseball Coach
Carlos James announced today that right-handed pitcher Alex Alvira signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his baseball career with the Golden Lions.
Alvira is a sophomore from Chabot College in Hayward, California, where he was an All-Conference selection in 2010 and helped lead the Gladiators to a Conference Championship and Runner-up Finish in the CCCAA NorCal Super Regional State Playoffs.
“Alex is an excellent addition to our recruiting class and pitching staff," said Coach James. "He was a successful two-sport athlete in high school who comes from a winning program at Chabot under the direction of Steve Friend, and I expect Alex to bring that relentless Gladiator tradition of excellence with him to UAPB."
As the first pitcher to sign as part of the 2012-13 recruiting class, Alvira fits right in line with Coach James' expectations of his players.
“I chose UAPB because I am excited about the direction the program is heading and want to be a part of their success," shared Alvira, "My goals are to earn my degree, compete against the best teams in college baseball, win a SWAC championship, and make some noise in the post-season."
A native of Merced in California, Alvira made the Dean's List last semester at Chabot. Prior to attending Chabot, he was named All-Conference both in baseball and water polo his senior year at Merced High School.
