COLLEGE PARK, Ga. — Arkansas-Pine Bluff's women's basketball program picked up one of its most significant victories in recent memory Tuesday evening, as the Lady Lions defeated Mississippi Valley State 81-74 at The Gateway Center Arena at College Park to advance to the SWAC Tournament quarterfinals. For head coach Erica Leak, the win marked the first postseason victory of her young coaching career, a milestone that punctuated a hard-fought performance from her squad.
UAPB got off to a blazing start, outscoring Mississippi Valley State 26-12 in the first quarter behind a dominant individual effort from Indiya Bowen. The junior guard was electric in the opening period, draining three three-pointers and converting inside the paint to help stake the Lady Lions to a 14-point advantage heading into the second quarter. Bowen would ultimately finish the night as UAPB's leading scorer with 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 3-of-5 from deep, adding four rebounds and a team-high three steals.
Matching Bowen's 19 points was Khaniah Gardner, who did her damage in the paint and at the free-throw line. The forward hauled in a game-high 10 rebounds — five offensive — and converted 9-of-14 from the charity stripe, providing a relentless interior presence throughout the contest. Jailah Pelly added 15 points in 39 minutes of work, dishing out four assists while connecting on several critical baskets in the fourth quarter to help seal the outcome. Jakyra Jackson delivered a career-high 15 points off the bench, shooting an efficient 4-of-8 from the field while adding five rebounds and a pair of steals in a performance that couldn't have come at a better time.
UAPB's second quarter was more turbulent, as Mississippi Valley State chipped into the lead and kept the game within reach through halftime at 44-35. The Lady Lions then navigated a difficult third quarter offensively, managing just 10 points, though Gardner's steady production and a tenacious rebounding effort kept the lead intact heading to the final period.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Lady Lions. Jasmine Davis opened the period with a momentum-swinging three-pointer, and UAPB went on to outscore Mississippi Valley State 27-25 in the final ten minutes to close out the victory. Davis contributed 5 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals on the night, while Briontanay Marshall set a new career high with 15 rebounds — including 8 on the offensive glass — to go along with 3 assists. UAPB finished the game with 47 total boards, 23 of which came on the offensive end, a testament to the relentless effort Marshall and the front line brought all night.
With the first-round win secured, Coach Leak's Lady Lions now turn their attention to the quarterfinal round, where they will face No. 2 seed Alcorn State on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. CST.
