PINE BLUFF, Arkansas - Senior Brant Voth and senior Carlos Rodriguez-Velez each collected two extra base hits to help power the UAPB Golden Lions over the Southern Jaguars 13-3 on Friday.
Junior Brenda Hamlin started on the mound and picked up the win for UAPB. The right-hander went six innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on four hits, allowing two walks and striking out four.
Rodriguez-Velez's two extra base hits were the highlight of a 3-for-4 day, and included two doubles, a walk and three RBI. Voth made his contribution with a double, a triple and three RBI, part of a 2-for-5 performance at the plate. Junior Eli Gries-Smith also contributed for the Golden Lions, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a walk and three RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Golden Lions first put runs on the board in the first inning.
The Jaguars then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 3-2 until the Golden Lions expanded their advantage in the fifth. UAPB pushed across a run on Rodriguez's two-out RBI double, which brought the score to 4-2 in favor of the Golden Lions.
UAPB held Southern without a run before expanding their lead to 10-2 the following inning. The Golden Lions bats heated up in the inning, scoring six runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Gries-Smith.
The Jaguars fought back, closing the gap to 10-3 until UAPB added some insurance in the seventh. bringing the score to 13-3 in favor of UAPB. The score remained 13-3 for the rest of the game, as the Golden Lions coasted to the win.
