HOUSTON, Texas – The Golden Lions of UAPB refused to back down. In a high-octane 10-inning battle, UAPB clawed out an 11-8 victory Saturday afternoon behind a relentless offense, timely pitching, and championship-level grit.
UAPB wasted no time roaring to life with a six-run explosion in the second inning, sparked by Brant Voth's RBI bunt single and a clutch 3-RBI error off the bat of Eli Gries-Smith, capitalizing on defensive miscues.
Trinidad DeLaGarza and Gavin Terry delivered back-to-back RBI moments in the fourth to push the lead to 8-0, before the momentum began to shift. The Golden Lions held strong through a late rally, fending off a furious comeback to send the game into extras.
In the 10th, it was all UAPB.
A leadoff walk by Jesus Riera and a single from Voth set the stage. DeLaGarza forced the go-ahead run across on a fielder's choice, and Gavin Terry and Carlos Rodriguez followed with RBI hits to give UAPB breathing room.
Cole Kenyon earned his first win of the season on the mound, silencing the final Texas Southern threat with a scoreless 10th to lock in the dub.
Voth led the Lions with three hits and an RBI, while DeLaGarza scored three times and plated three more. In total, eight different Golden Lions recorded hits in the 12-hit effort.
