#UAPBBaseball Stay Hot in 12-9 Victory Against Alcorn State

LORMAN, MS --UAPB received contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, helping the Golden Lions put 12 runs on the board and knock off the Alcorn State Braves 12-9 Saturday.

Senior Brant Voth got the win for UAPB. The right-hander went 6.1 innings, giving up eight runs, five earned, on 11 hits, allowing two walks and striking out six.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Golden Lions got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Junior Eli Gries-Smith's run-scoring single highlighted a two-run inning for UAPB.

The Golden Lions then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the third inning after the Braves cut it to 2-1. UAPB picked up two runs when a single from senior Ben VanMaanen scored Gries-Smith and senior Carlos Rodriguez-Velez, which brought the Golden Lions lead to 4-1.

Alcorn State narrowed UAPB's lead to 4-2 before the Golden Lions stretched the advantage to 7-2 in the fourth inning. The Golden Lions picked up three runs in the frame, two of them coming across on a two-RBI double from senior Vinny Saumell.

UAPB held the Braves scoreless before their offense got in gear the next inning. The Golden Lions scored four runs in the inning, highlighted by a one-run single off the bat of Saumell, bringing the score to 11-2 in favor of UAPB.

Alcorn State got within 11-5 until the Golden Lions scored again in the sixth inning to stretch its lead to 12-5. Senior Jesus Riera came across to score the lone run of the inning for UAPB and get them on the board. Alcorn State put four runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Golden Lions still held on for the 12-9 win.
