PORTLAND, Ore. – Despite a dominant performance from Quion Williams, who posted a double-double with 31 points and 13 rebounds, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff men's basketball team fell short on the road to the Portland Pilots, 83-74, Thursday night.
The Golden Lions had three players score in double figures. Williams led the way with his all-around effort, while Jaquan Scott added 14 points, and Jai'chaunn Hayes provided a spark off the bench with 11 points.
UAPB found rhythm from beyond the arc, connecting on eight three-pointers in 25 attempts. Hayes was the most consistent from deep, hitting three triples on the night.
Defensively, the Golden Lions were active and opportunistic, forcing 19 Portland turnovers, which led to 28 points on the offensive end. Williams paced UAPB's defensive effort with four steals.
How It Happened
UAPB got off to a slow start offensively, trailing 45-29 at halftime.
In the second half, the Golden Lions battled back, trimming the deficit to 80-66 before igniting an 8-0 run, capped by a Williams layup to make it 80-74 with just six seconds remaining. Despite the late surge, Portland converted at the line to hold off UAPB and secure the 83-74 win.
The Golden Lions took advantage of Portland's miscues in the second half, scoring 21 points off 14 turnovers in the final period alone.
