PINE BLUFF, Arkansas --An outstanding offensive output was not enough for University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff baseball team on Friday. The Golden Lions put up six runs, but could not hold the Texas Southern Tigers, as they dropped game one 17-6 at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex.
Sophomore Damon Elarton started and took the loss on the mound for UAPB.
At the plate, the Golden Lions were paced by sophomore Edwin DeLaCruz, who went 2-for-3 on the day with three RBI. Junior Karsten Vasquez furnished a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Junior Brandon Simon also helped out for UAPB, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Golden Lions got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. UAPB's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a one-run single off the bat of DeLaCruz.
The Golden Lions then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the third inning after the Tigers cut it to 4-3. UAPB picked up two runs when a single from DeLaCruz scored Simon and sophomore Aidan Martinez, which brought the score to 6-3 in favor of the Golden Lions. The Golden Lions were unable to hold the lead, as Texas Southern scored 14 times over the remaining four innings to grab the 17-6 win.
