#UAPBBaseball Drops Game 1 To Southern

PINE BLUFF, Arkansas - Sophomore Dante Leach collected three hits, but the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff baseball fell to the Southern Jaguars 11-6 Saturday at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex.

Sophomore Andrew Duran got the ball to start for UAPB (3-11-1, 0-1) and took the loss. sophomore Rocky King was a bright spot for the Golden Lions, coming out of the bullpen and throwing two innings, giving up one run on two hits, with no walks and three strikeouts.

In addition to his three hits, Leach had a double, a home run and an RBI to lead the Golden Lions. Junior Timothy Martin put together a standout performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Sophomore Lawrence Noble also contributed for UAPB, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding two walks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Golden Lions got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Leach put UAPB on the board with a two-out solo home run off senior Joseph Battaglia.

The Jaguars then rallied to score 11 runs and take an 11-1 lead before the Golden Lions got back on the board in the eighth. The UAPB offense exploded for five runs, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Martin, which brought the score to 11-6 in favor of the Jaguars. The Golden Lions were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.

» UAPB's power output was led by Leach, who compiled two extra-base hits in the ballgame.
» UAPB's highest-scoring inning was the eighth when it pushed five runs across.
» UAPB pitchers faced 47 Southern hitters in the game, allowing five ground balls and 10 fly balls while striking out 10.
» The Golden Lions drew five walks from Southern pitching.
» Leach led the Golden Lions at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, and an RBI.

The Golden Lions will be back in action for game two of tomorrow's doubleheader.  First pitch is set for 11:30 a.m.
