#UAPBBASEBALL CONCLUDES SERIES SWEEP OF GRAMBLING ST.

Grambling, LA. - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff baseball team won its third consecutive game on Saturday's doubleheader, taking down Grambling St. 9-8 in game one and 18-9 in game two to complete and completing the three-game sweep of the Tigers. The Golden Lions scored a combined 41 runs in all three games versus Grambling St., winning game one Friday 14-6.
 
Game 1: UAPB 9 Grambling St. 8
 
Both teams exchanged leads before Grambling St. jumped out to an (8-2) lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. UAPB offense took control late in the game, putting up three runs in the top of the seventh inning.  
 
Freshman Lawrence Noble got things started with a single to left field and stole second on the next pitch. Next at-bat, junior Kacy Higgins was hit by a pitch, followed by senior Nick Kreutzer three-run home run blasted over the left-field wall to cut the Tigers deficit to three (8-5). 
 
The Golden Lions defense stayed solid in the last two innings and kept the flood gate open as the bats got warmed up. In the top of the eighth inning, sophomore Timothy Martin doubled through the right side, scoring junior Humberto Maldonado and Karsten Vasquez, who reached base earlier with a walk and a double to center field to cut the lead to one (8-7).  
 
In the top ninth inning down by one, UAPB was knocking at the door. Freshman Edwin DeLaCruz singled up the middle with one out, followed by freshman Dante Leach two batters later with a double to left field with two outs advancing DelaCruz to third. "Mr. Clutch" sophomore Braelin Hence came in the game as a pinch hitter a few hours fresh after crossing the stage getting his bachelor's degree. Hence doubled to left field, scoring DelaCruz and Leach to give the Golden Lions a (9-8) lead.
 
The Golden Lions pitching staff got plenty of support on the defensive side, giving up only five hits. Senior Antoine Luster enters the game in the bottom of the fifth inning for the win, pitching 3.2 IP, giving up no hits and four strikeouts.  
 
Luster handed the ball off to graduate Tony Horn Jr., who got the final three outs and finished the game with two strikeouts to pick up the save. 
 
Martin led UAPB at the plate going 2-for-5 with three RBIs, followed by Kreutzer going 1-for-5 with three RBIs, and Hence going 1-for-1 with two RBIs.  DeLaCruz added two hits, along with Leach going 3-for-5, scoring a run. 
 
 
 
GAME 2: UAPB 18 Grambling St. 9
Game two was all about the offense as UAPB continued to light up the scoreboard. Hence led the game off with a double to right field, followed by Higgins single to left field.  Kreutzer single to left field scored Hence giving UAPB a (1-0) lead.

Next at-bat, Martin single RBI gave UAPB a (2-0) lead before Leach tripled to right field scored two runs, pushing the Golden Lions lead to four (4-0).  The Golden Lions kept the momentum going with a double by Vasquez, scoring Leach (5-0).  Noble RBI triple gave UAPB a (6-0) lead before batting around with Hence single up the middle, scoring Noble to add to their lead (7-0).  

Grambling would add two in the bottom of the first inning before UAPB would add three runs in the top of the second inning to push the lead back to eight (10-2).  The Tigers made a push scoring two runs in the bottom of the second inning to cut within six (10-4).  

After both teams went back in fourth, UAPB offense stacked four runs on three hits in the top of the third.  Leach plated two runs with a single to right-center, followed by Leach scoring on a wild pitch, and Vasquez singled to left center, scoring DeLaCruz, who reached earlier with an error by third baseman, to give UAPB a (14-4) lead.

UAPB kept the offense rolling, scoring two runs in the next two innings to jump out to their largest lead of the game (16-6) in the top of the fifth inning.  

Grambling St. would answer back and cut into the Golden Lions lead, scoring three runs (16-9) in the bottom of the seventh inning.
However, UAPB responded with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth to clinch the sweep.

Junior Joel Barker picked up the win on the mound going 5.0 IP, giving up seven runs.  Horn closed out the game going 3.0 IP giving up two hits with four strikeouts.

UAPB out hit the Tigers 21-9, along with four players with three hits apiece.  Leach led the Golden Lions at the plate, going 2-for-5 with five RBIs, followed Martin going 3-for-5 with three RBIs, Noble going 3-for-5 with two RBIs, and Kreutzer going 3-for-5 with two RBIs.  

The Golden Lions will be back in action on the road Tuesday, May 11, against Central Arkansas at 6 p.m. at Bear Stadium.
