Baseball Falls To Lane In Home Opener

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff baseball fell to Lane College 12-9 Friday at the Torii Hunter Complex in game one of a three-game series.

After Lane scored in the first inning, UAPB got on the board in the bottom of the first when senior Darrian Aldridge walked, then stole second, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a fielder choice by senior Nick Kreutzer to tie the game at 1-1.

The Dragons went on to add four runs in the top of the second and two runs in the top of the third to take a 7-1 lead.  UAPB would cut into the lead when Aldridge, who previously walked earlier at-bat, scored off throwing error by the third baseman to cut the lead down to five at 7-2.

After the Dragons went up 8-2 in the top of the fourth, the Golden Lions responded when senior Justin Robinson led the rally with a single to center field, followed by sophomore Dalton Smead single to right field, scoring Robinson to put the score at 8-3.  Junior Kacy Higgins walked, moving Smead to second with no outs, and Parker would come up big with a single up the middle, scoring Smead to cut the lead to 8-4.

Junior Humberto Maldonado singled to left field, scoring Higgins to put the Golden Lions within three at 8-5 in the bottom of the fourth.

Lane managed to push the lead back to four at 9-5 in the top of the fifth inning.  UAPB took advantage of the pitching change in the bottom of the fifth when Robinson was hit by a pitch, then advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Senior Bryce Roesch singled to left field, scoring Robinson. Roesch would eventually score on an RBI single to right field to cut the lead within 9-7.

The Golden Lions kept the rally going in the bottom of the sixth inning when Maldonado singled to center field, followed by sophomore Brandon Simon's single to left field, moving Maldonado to second.  Senior Austin Krzeminski singled to left, scoring Maldonado to pull to within 9-8. Simon tied the game at 9-9 with an RBI from Roesch, but it was not enough in the comeback as Lane score three in the seventh inning.

Junior Humberto Maldonaldo led the Golden Lions at the plate, going 5-for-6 at the plate with one RBI.

Game two will resume tomorrow in a doubleheader, with the first game starting at 11 a.m. and game three at 1 p.m. at the Torii Hunter Complex.
