MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff men's basketball team won at Alabama St. 61-56 Monday night.
The Golden Lions (3-12, 2-1 SWAC) had two players score in double figures, led by Marquell Carter, who had 19 points. Dequan Morris added 10 points and two steals and Markedric Bell added nine points, three steals and two blocks.
The UAPB offense was very productive from three point land, pouring in five threes on 12 attempts. Carter was the most prolific shooter for the Golden Lions, draining a career-high tying five treys in the contest.
UAPB's defense held Alabama State to only 13% shooting from beyond the arc and 37% from the field.
UAPB started off strong, putting together a 28-27 lead heading into halftime. UAPB capitalized on nine Alabama State turnovers in the period, turning them into seven points on the other end of the floor.
Following intermission, UAPB kept widening that lead, expanding it to 46-43 before going on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 52-43 with 5:58 to go in the contest. The Hornets narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Golden Lions still held on for the 61-56 win. UAPB got a boost from its bench with 14 points.
"We had a good practice yesterday and the plan was to play everybody to find the right chemistry," said UAPB head coach George Ivory. "We worked a lot of getting the ball to the post man at practice and it showed tonight. I'm proud of the team as a whole because everybody came in and gave their best effort in the victory."
The Golden Lions return to action Saturday for their home opener, when they host Southern U. for Greek Night at 7:30 p.m. The UAPB Sports Network will have a live radio broadcast on 99.3 FM The Beat, online at uapblionsroar.com, and on the free UAPB Athletics App.
