HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women's basketball team lost at Alabama A&M 74-55 Saturday.
The Lady Lions (2-9, SWAC) had two players score in double figures, led by Jayla Atmore, who had 16 points and four assists. Kyeonia Harris added 14 points off of the bench and Trasity Totten added six points and six rebounds.
UAPB forced 15 Alabama A&M turnovers. The Lady Lions turned those takeaways into 13 points on the other end of the floor. Sha'Kendra Tillry led the way individually with one steal.
UAPB got off to a slow start out of the gate, falling behind 19-10 at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Lions fought back in the second period, narrowing the deficit to 35-28 at halftime.
Alabama A&M continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 46-33 advantage before UAPB went on a 5-0 run to trim its deficit to 46-38 with 4:56 to go in the third.
Alabama A&M countered and stretched its lead to 56-45 heading into the fourth. UAPB turned 10 offensive rebounds into four second chance points on the way to scoring 17 total points in the quarter but could not get closer.
"One thing that stood out was the lack of energy," said UAPB first-year head coach Dawn Brown. "Our guards stepped up, but our post players didn't come through and they took advantage of it tonight. We got to give Alabama A&M credit of getting to the free-throw line and taking advantage of good shots. We're going to go back and watch the game film, and we'll come out Monday ready to play with a different mindset."
The Lady Lions return to action Monday at Alabama St at 5:30 p.m. The UAPB Sports Network will have a live radio broadcast on 99.3 FM The Beat, online at uapblionsroar.com, and on the free UAPB Athletics App.
