BATON ROUGE, La. – The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff baseball team lost a Saturday afternoon shootout at Southern 16-13 at Lee-Hines Field.
Nick Kreutzer hit his sixth homer of the season,
Bryce Roesch,
Justin Robinson, and
Austin Toth each had two hits, and
Larry Sims drove in four runs in the game.
Trailing 5-2 after four innings, the Golden Lions posted a seven-run fifth.
Tywon Mackey Jr., Toth, and
Jarficur Parker singled to lead off the inning, with Parker's hit scoring Mackey.
Following a sacrifice bunt by
Ryan Mallison, Sims' double down the left field line scored Toth and Parker to tie the score at 5-5. Kreutzer then launched a two-run homer to right center to put UAPB back in front, 7-5.
Ricardo Sanchez then reached on an error, advanced to second on a passed ball, and scored on an RBI single by Roesch, who then stole second base. Robinson's single up the middle scored Roesch for a 9-5 Golden Lion lead.
Southern responded with a six-run fifth, and after UAPB cut the deficit to 11-9 in the sixth, the Golden Lions took the lead again with a three-run seventh. Sanchez led off being hit by a pitch, and scored on an RBI triple by Roesch, who later scored on a passed ball to regain the lead. Toth, who reached based on a fielder's choice grounder, stole second and scored on a two-out single by
Davion White for a 13-11 Golden Lion lead.
However, Southern responded with a run the bottom of the seventh and four in the bottom of the eighth for the final margin.
UAPB returns to action Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Memphis.
