Pine Bluff, Ark. – A slow start in the second and third quarter cost the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women's basketball team a chance to close out the home portion of their schedule on a positive note Monday night.
The Lady Lions shot 19 percent (5 of 26) in the middle periods and turned the ball over a total of 24 times in losing to Jackson State 61-41 at H.O. Clemmons Arena.
The trio of Christina Ellis, Kaisah Lucky, and Marneisha Hamer combined for 33 points for Jackson State (14-13, 10-6), which remained tied for third place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference standings with Grambling St.
Sophomore guard
Trasity Totten collected a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds for UAPB (5-19, 2-15). The Lady Lions, who shot 13 of 49 (26.5 percent) for the game, found themselves down just 16-12 with 9:15 left in the second quarter after a short jumper from senior center
Shawntayla Harris. The Lady Tigers outscored the Lady Lions 20-2 over that stretch to hold a 36-14 lead at halftime.
Sophomore guard
Kyeonia Harris chimed in with seven points for the Lady Lions. UAPB closes it out the season on the road Saturday at Mississippi Valley State. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
FASTBREAK
· Shawntayla Harris, Kye Richardson and Ashlee Daniel, the Lady Lions' three seniors, teamed for eight points, nine rebounds and six assists in their final home game.
· Junior forward Katherine Darden had six rebounds for UAPB.
· The Lady Lions held the Lady Tigers to just five points in the fourth quarter.
· The Lady Tigers scored 25 points of the Lady Lions' turnovers and got 28 points off the bench.
