LUBBOCK, TX. - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women's basketball team fell to Texas Tech 81-55 in a road contest Friday at United Supermarkets Arena.
The Lady Lions got off to a hot start and jumped out to a 12-6 lead off a fast break layup by senior Noe'll Taylor in the first four minutes of the game before the Red Raiders went on a 19-4 run to push their lead to 25-16 at the end of the first quarter.
The two sides battled back-and-forth through the early part of the second half as the Lady Lions defense slowly held the Red Raiders shooting 5-for-19 from the field, but they still manage to go into the locker room with a 44-31 at the half by taking advantage of shots in the paint.
In the second half, Texas Tech came out shooting 14-for-28 from the field at 50% compared to UAPB 10-for-34 at 29% to ice the game, as they manage to control the game for the win.
"The initial game plan was to go out and compete and be the aggressor," said first-year UAPB head coach Dawn Brown. "We talked about being able to jump out early and try to score as fast as we could. One of the biggest things I have to give credit to is the guard position. We did a great job of getting some quality minutes with both of them being on the floor and being leaders. We also did a good job of sharing the ball, but they came out and made some adjustments by trying to go inside a lot, and we really didn't respond well. But overall so we got to do a better job with that."Â
Seniors, Kyeonia Harris, led the Lady Lions with 11 points, followed by Taylor with nine points, and junior Jayla Atmore with seven points. Freshman Nissa-Sam Grant continues to stand out against power-five opponents with seven rebounds and three blocks.Â
UAPB will be back in action after the Christmas break as the team heads to Little Rock Dec. 29 at 3 p.m. to take on Philander Smith College at Mims Gym.
