Fayetteville, Ark. - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women's tennis team began the 2019 season on the road with a non-conference historical match against the University of Arkansas. The Lady Lions would fall to the host Lady Razorbacks, 7-0 in the first match and 5-0 in the second match at the Billingsley Tennis Center.
This is the first meeting between the two athletic programs in the history of both institutions.
In the doubles match the Lady Razorbacks defeated the Lady Lions 7-0 with Martina Zerulo and Jackie Carr defeated
Cierra Fenwick and
Malaik Muhammad 6-0. Also in the double match, Lauren Alter and Laura Rijkers defeated
Karissa Fenwick and
Malaik Muhammad 6-0.
In the single matches
Ariel Zena Graves took three points in match one of the singles game, but couldn't take the game off her Arkansas counterpart, to be defeated 6-3. The Lady Razorback would go on to win the singles match 5-0.
"I think it was good to make history playing against a quality team like the University of Arkansas and start at relationship with both tennis programs," said head coach James Cowan. "With the scheduling, it's going to help our program with in-state recruiting in the state of Arkansas."
