LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Lady Lions soccer team fell to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Lady Trojans 7-0 at the Coleman Sports Recreation Complex.
UALR got off to a quick start when Maeve Burger slipped one past UAPB keeper
Sariah Orocu in the second minute of the ball game. Moments later, the Lady Trojans managed an additional two goals to extend its lead to 3-0 in the first 10 minutes of play. The Lady Lions stopped the bleeding and did not give up a goal for the rest of the first half, and showed signs of life in the second half as seniors
Karissa Fenwick and
Rebecca Holmes each produced a shot on goal, but fatigue got the best of UAPB as UALR scored four second half goals.
"The score is irrelevant to me," said UAPBÂ head coach Dr.
Ted Flogaites. "UALR were the better team, no question, but we played from a deep place in our hearts and I thought we were a credit to the university and the jersey. We cannot ask more from the players than what they gave. Given that we had no exhibition matches and are limited in terms of being able to replicate the demands of the match in training, I thought the players were committed, and over the course of 90 minutes, we grew into the match a bit. We had a few bright passages of play and while we have a lot to work on, I'm enormously proud of the team and the effort they put into the match," said Flogaites. "Onward and upward, but these are brave kids and tonight proved that."Â
Orocu finished with a game-high seven saves in the loss. Fenwick finished with a team-high three shots.
As a team the Lady Lions gave up 20 shots and finished with five.
UAPBÂ (0-1) returns to action on Sunday, September 2 as it travels to Conway to face the University of Central Arkansas in non-conference action. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
