PINE BLUFF, Ark. (April 1) - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Baseball team split a doubleheader with Southern University with UAPB pulling a 9-8 win over SU in extra inning in game one and the Jaguars defeating the Golden Lions, 7-3 in game two, here Saturday afternoon at the Torii Hunter Baseball, Softball and Little League Complex.
In the first game, UAPB finished the contest with 11 hits with both
Sergio Esparza and Bradley Lopez finishing with three hits each to lead the Golden Lions.
SU recorded 10 hits in the contest with both Chris Eusay and Robinson Mateo finished with three hits apiece to lead the Jaguars.
Kenny Hinton (1-0) got the win in game one. He gave up two hits, one earned run and struck out one in two and one-third innings for work.
Tyrus Lopez the UAPB starter toed the rubber for three and one-third innings, allowing five hits, two earned runs and striking out one in the 16 batter he faced.
Josh Sparks (0-1) received the loss for the Jaguars. He pitched two innings in relief, allowing two hits, one earned run and striking out two in the nine batters he faced. Harold Myles, the SU starter gave up four hits and struck out six in his six innings of work.
UAPB jumped out to a 3-0 lead with the Golden Lions plating three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Both
Jordan Knox and
Sergio Esparza scored the first two runs of the inning on a SU throwing error. Then
Aderly Perez would then score on a
Corey Henderson sacrifice bunt for their final run of the inning.
SU would retake the lead in the top of the fourth inning with Jaguars pushing across four runs in the inning to take a 4-3 lead.
UAPB made the score 8-4 with the Golden Lions plating five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Jaguars would tie the score at 8-8 with SU scoring three runs in the top of the eighth and one in the top of the ninth inning.
UAPB would win the contest in the bottom of the 10
th inning with Perez scoring on a Bradley Lopez single up the middle for the 9-8 win.
In game two, UAPB recorded nine hits in the contest with
Jaquese Moore, Juan Soriano and Knox finishing with two hits apiece to lead the Golden Lions.
SU tallied eight hits in the contest with Bobby Johnson finishing with two hits to lead the Jaguars.
Troy Lewis (4-2) picked up the win in game two for SU. He gave up three hits and struck out four in three and two-third innings of relief. Tyler Robinson the Jaguar starter gave five hits, one earned runs and struck out two in five innings of work.
Jake Waters (1-2) received the loss for the Golden Lions. In his outing, Waters gave up one hit and two earned runs in the two batters he faced.
Thomas Sanchez, the UAPB starter gave up three hits, one earned runs and striking out one in his two and two-third inning of work.
SU took an early 1-0 lead with Jaguars pushing across one run in the top of the first inning.
UAPB tied the contest at 1-1 with Moore scoring on a Soriano triple to right center in the bottom of the first inning.
SU plated two runs to take a 3-1 in the top of the second inning.
The Golden Lions tied the score at 3-3 with UAPB plating a run in the bottom of the fifth inning and another in the bottom of the sixth.
SU pushed across for runs in the top of the eighth inning for the 7-3 win.
