PINE BLUFF, Ark. The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Baseball team split a doubleheader with Grambling State with the Golden Lions winning game one 7-4 and the Tigers winning game two, 11-5 here Saturday afternoon at the Torii Hunter Baseball, Softball and Little Complex.
In game one, UAPB finished the contest with 12 hits, whereas GSU finished with eight. Both teams finished with three errors each in the contest.
UAPB had two Golden Lions to finish with a pair of hits in Gabriel Munoz and
Vladimir Gomez, whereas GSU was led by Tray Bell with three hits.
Blake Estep (6-3) picked up the win for the Golden Lions as he pitched a one-third inning in relief.
Billy Olson made the start for UAPB, allowing eight hits, two earned runs and striking out seven in five and two-third innings of work.
Kevin Walsh pitched two innings in relief of Estep, striking out two in the eight batters he faced. In relief of Walsh was
Andre Davis, who picked up this four save of the season, striking out two in the in one inning of work.
Dion Holbrook (2-6) received the loss for GSU, allowing nine hits, three earned runs and striking out two in five and two-third innings of work. Andre Wilson came in relief of Holbrook, allowing one hit and striking out one in an inning of work. Also making appearances on the mound for the Tigers was Marlon Pruitt and Desmond Stegall. Pruitt struck out one in one-third inning of work, followed by Stegall, who pitched one inning, allowing two hits and striking out one.
Rashawn Tillman scored the Golden Lions first run of the game, who left off the inning with a triple to left field, scored on a Chris Burns fielder's choice in the bottom of the first inning.
GSU tied the contest at 1-1 in top of the third inning on a Larry Barraza sacrifice fly to right field scoring Edwin Drexler.
The Golden Lions regained the lead in the bottom of the third inning on a Munoz double to left field scoring Tillman. Then Munoz would score on a Burns double to centerfield, giving UAPB a 3-1 lead.
GSU tied the contest in the top of the fifth inning at 3-3 with Dee Brown scoring on a Drexler single up the middle, followed by a Bell double left field scoring Drexler.
The Tigers broke the 3-3 tied in the top of the sixth inning as Yariel Medina scoring on a wild pitch, giving GSU a 4-3 lead.
Gomez led off the bottom of the sixth with a single left field would spark a three-run sixth inning for the Golden Lions, giving them a 6-4 lead.
UAPB plated one more run in the bottom of the seventh for the 7-4 finale.
Game two was just the opposite of game one with the Tigers hitting three homers in the contest.
UAPB finished the contest with five hits and two errors, whereas GSU finished the contest with nine hits and two errors.
UAPB was led by Josh Cassidy with two hits, while Stegall led the Tigers from the plate with two.
Ike O'Bear received the win for the Tigers, allowing three hits, two earned runs and striking out three in five and two-thirds innings of work. Brennan Williams was the second Tiger pitcher to take the mound for GSU as he gave up two hits, and striking out two in two and one-third innings of work. Torrean Woods and Marlon Pruitt also took the mound for GSU.
Humberto Medina received the loss for UAPB, allowing three hits, four earned runs and striking out one in one and one-third inning of work.
Ciji Ramos also made an appearance on the mound for UAPB, allowing one hit, one earned run and striking out one in two-third innings of work. Both
Jerimiah Figueroa and
Chris Phelps took the hill late in the contest. Figueroa pitched two inning, allowing one hit, three earned runs and striking out one in two innings of work, while Phelps pitched five innings in relief, allowing four hits and striking out four.
GSU scored in every inning, except for the sixth and ninth inning. The Tigers plated three runs in the first, one run in the second, the third, the fifth and the eighth inning and scored two runs in the fourth and seventh inning.
UAPB plated one run in the second, sixth and ninth inning and pushed across two runs in fifth for the 11-5 finale.
