UAPB rips Alcorn State, 17-3

PINE BLUFF, Ark. (April 30)  - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Baseball Team picked up a 17-3 win over Alcorn State in their final home game of the season, here Wednesday afternoon at the Torii Hunter Baseball, Softball and Little League Complex.

In addition, the game was tabbed Legislators and Fan Appreciation Day, with the UAPB Department of Athletics recognizing State Legislators for their help in securing funding for the completion of the Torii Hunter Baseball, Softball and Little League Complex, and honoring UAPB fans for their dedication to the Golden Lions and Lady Lions Athletics program.
 
On hand from the State Legislature were Representatives James Word of District 16 ($25,000), Charles Armstrong of District 30 ($10,000) and Mike Holcomb of District 10 ($5,000) to present a check in the sum of $55,000 to  UAPB Director of Athletics Mr. Lonza Hardy, Jr., Chancellor Dr. Laurence B. Alexander and Director of Alumni and Government Relations Mr. John Kuykendall Jr. for completion of the Torii Hunter Complex.  Contributing representatives who were unable to attend the game were George B. McGill of District 78 ($5,000), Bobby Pierce of District 27 ($5,000) and David Fielding of District 5 ($5,000).
In addition various prizes, including an iPad, gift baskets, football season tickets and autographed jerseys and caps.
 
Hardy expressed his appreciation to the State Representatives as well as the fans.
 
"We are appreciative of the financial assistance we have received from our state governmental officials for helping us turn a field of dreams at the Torii Hunter Complex into a reality.  When this facility is completed, it will be a crown jewel in the Arkansas Delta.
 
"I also want to thank our students, faculty, staff, alumni and community supporters for cheering on the Golden Lions baseball team during this magnificent season," added Hardy.  "Together, this is shaping up to be an historic season for the program."


 
UAPB (20-25) finished the contest with game high 15 hits with Kirby Campbell going three-for-four from the plate and scoring three runs to lead the Golden Lions.
 
ASU (8-38) finished the contest with six hits with Joshua Powell going three-for-four from to plate and scoring one run to lead the Braves.
 
Dixon Marble (1-2) picked up the win for the Golden Lions as he pitched three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out two, while Jaron Gold the UAPB starter pitching four innings, allowing four hits, and striking out three.
 
Charles Wilson (0-2) received the loss for ASU as he pitched two innings in n relief, allowing five hits, two earned runs in the 15 batters he faced, while Jonathan Morales the Braves starter pitched three innings, allowing four hits, three earned runs and striking out one.
 
UAPB jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a solo homer by Mike Wieland, followed by a Cassidy sacrifice fly scoring Isias Alcantar.

The Braves tied the contest at 2-2 in the top of the second inning with both Powell and Ashton Lewis scoring on a UAPB throwing error.

ASU broke the 2-2 tie in the top of the third inning with Walter Vives scoring on an Earl Burl fielder's choice, giving the Braves a 3-2 lead.
 
Wieland picked up his second RBI of the game with sacrifice fly scoring Vladimir Gomez tying the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the third inning.

UAPB plated 14 more runs for the 17-3 win with the Golden Lions scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth, two runs in the fifth and eight runs in the bottom of the eighth.

The Golden Lions will return to action this weekend as they will travel Houston, Texas for a three-game series Southwestern Athletic Conference Western Division series with Texas Southern, beginning on Saturday, May 3 with a single game and a doubleheader slated for Saturday, May 4.
