PINE BLUFF, Ark. (April 12) - The University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Baseball team split a doubleheader with Southern University as the Jaguars won game one, 4-3 and the Golden Lions winning game two, 17-16 in an old fashion shootout, here Saturday afternoon at the Torii Hunter Baseball, Softball and Little League Complex.
In game one, UAPB outhit SU, 9-8.
The Golden Lions were led by
Jordan Haas, who went a perfect two-for-two from the plate to lead UAPB, whereas the Jaguars were led by Sean Washington, who recorded three hits in four at-bats, scoring one run and driving in two runs to lead SU.
Santos, Saldivar (3-0) picked up the win for the Jaguars in game one as he pitched eight innings, allowing eight hits, two earned runs and striking out five, while Rafeal Diaz recorded his first save of the season as he pitched one inning of relief, allowing one hit and striking out one in the four batters he faced.
Dixon Marble received the loss for the Golden Lions as he pitched two and one-third innings in relief, allowing three hits, one earned run and striking out one, while
Jim Ploeger, the UAPB starter went six and two-third innings, allowing five hits, two earned runs and striking out seven in the 27 batters, he faced.
UAPB jumped out to a 3-0 lead with the Golden Lions scoring one run in the bottom of the third inning as
Mitch Bruckshaw scored on a
Andre Davis sacrifice fly to left field, followed by a Jeremiah Figueroa ground out to the shortstop scoring
Mike Wieland in the bottom of the fourth inning and then Wieland would score again on a Joshua Campbell double to left field in the bottom of the sixth inning.
SU tied the contest at 3-3 in the top of the seventh inning as the Jaguars plated three runs on a wild pitch scoring Jose DeLaTorre. Brian Rowry would then score on a passed ball and then Robinson Mateo would score on a Washington single to right field.
A Washington homer to left field gave the Jaguars the 4-3 win over the Golden Lions.
In game two, both team would combine for 33 runs, 33 hits, five errors and a combined total of 10 pitchers, who made appearances on the mound for both SU and UAPB
UAPB (11-22, 11-5 SWAC) finished the contest with 12 hits with
Vladimir Gomez going a perfect five-for-five from the plate, scoring four runs and driving in seven to lead the Golden Lions.
SU (6-17, 2-10 SWAC) bolstered a game high 21 hits with Rowry going a four-for-six from the plate, scoring two runs and driving in five.
Kevin Walsh (1-0) picked up the win for UAPB as he pitched two innings in relief, allowing one hit, one earned run and striking out two in the nine batters he faced.
Mikey Ramirez, the UAPB starter pitched five innings, allowing 12 hits, eight earned runs and striking out three in the 26 batters he faced.
Diaz (0-1) received the loss for SU as he pitched one-third inning, allowing two hits in the three batters he faced, while John Thigpen, the Jaguar starter pitched five and one-third innings, allowing eight hits, five earned runs and striking out one in the 30 batters he faced.
UAPB grabbed the early 4-1 lead after three complete innings of play.
SU would erupts in their half of the fourth as the Jaguars plated six runs to take a 7-4 lead. The Jaguars increased their lead to 13-4 as they plated six more runs in the top of the sixth inning.
UAPB responded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut SU's lead to 13-8.
The Jaguars added to their lead with two runs in the top of the seventh inning, to make the score 15-8 in their half of the seventh inning.
UAPB clawed their way back into the contest with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning cutting SU's lead to 15-11.
The Jaguars added one more run in the top of the eighth innings to increase their lead to 16-11.
In their half of the eighth inning, the Golden Lions would rally as they scored six runs as Cassidy scored on a Bruckshaw base loaded hit-by-pitch, followed by a Gomez bases loaded walk scoring Wieland. Then a
Tyler Oertle double scored both Bruckshaw and
Rashawn Tillman, followed by an
Isias Alcantar two-run single scoring both Oertle and Gomez to give the Golden Lions the 17-16 win.
