PINE BLUFF, AR — The Golden Lions made a statement Friday afternoon at home, knocking off Texas Southern 6-4 to open a pivotal three-game SWAC series. Coming in two games behind the Tigers in the conference standings, the Golden Lions wasted no time making their presence felt, scoring in five of their first seven innings and never trailing on the way to improving their conference record to 11-5.
Kenney Fabian was the story on the mound, going a full six innings and holding Texas Southern to just one earned run on six hits. The right-hander struck out five, walked one, and worked efficiently through a Tigers lineup that came in with postseason aspirations. Fabian's composure in the middle innings was critical — TSU made noise in the fourth and fifth, but Fabian limited the damage and kept UAPB in front. Brendan Hamlin was masterful out of the bullpen, tossing three hitless innings to close it out, striking out three while navigating a couple of inherited baserunners in the later frames. Hamlin's performance was particularly impressive facing a left-heavy portion of the Texas Southern lineup late in the game.
Offensively, the Golden Lions put together a balanced 12-hit effort with contributions throughout the lineup. Zach Wieder was the standout at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three doubles — every one of his hits going to the gap. His production set the table repeatedly and gave UAPB runners in scoring position throughout the afternoon. Weston Gingerich was the most efficient run-producer in the lineup, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a sacrifice fly while reaching base three times. His DH slot provided consistent punch in a spot that could have been exploited. Jose Vasquez led off and did his job, reaching base multiple times with a hit, a walk, and a sacrifice fly that drove in a run, finishing 1-for-3 with an RBI. Konner Giddley added two hits and an RBI out of the nine hole, and Ian Smith came off the bench to deliver a timely hit with an RBI as UAPB continued to find runs in different ways.
Nick Hockemeyer was another key contributor off the bench, singling and swiping a bag to help extend an inning, while Zyon Hamilton came in as a defensive replacement and added a hit in his limited at-bat. Lazaro Alvarado and Vinny Saumell each had their moments, with Saumell laying down a sacrifice bunt and doing the little things that keep rallies going against a quality pitching staff.
The Golden Lions' three errors were a concern, but the pitching staff managed to minimize the damage and keep UAPB's margin intact. TSU's four runs included three unearned, a detail that will provide some comfort heading into Saturday's rematch.
With the win, Arkansas-Pine Bluff now sits just one game back of Texas Southern in the conference standings. Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in Pine Bluff, with the Golden Lions looking to take control of the series and potentially pull even in the SWAC race.
