COLLEGE PARK, Ga. — Jailah Pelly scored 19 points, while Khaniah Gardner posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds to help lead the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women's basketball team to a 64-60 victory over Alcorn State on Wednesday at Gateway Center Arena.
With the win, UAPB improved to 15-15 on the season.
Pelly added two steals in the victory, while Indiya Bowen finished with 14 points and four assists as the trio combined for 49 of UAPB's 64 points.
UAPB also made its presence felt on the glass, outrebounding Alcorn State 40-33, including 12 offensive rebounds that led to five second-chance points. Gardner led that effort with three offensive boards.
Defensively, the Golden Lions were strong throughout the contest, holding Alcorn State to 35.5 percent shooting from the field and just 20 percent from three-point range.
UAPB fell behind early, trailing 11-4 in the opening quarter, but responded with a 5-0 run late in the period to cut the deficit to 11-9. In the second quarter, the Golden Lions found their rhythm and used a 7-0 run to turn a 17-14 deficit into a 21-17 lead. UAPB took a 25-18 advantage into halftime after forcing five Alcorn State turnovers in the quarter and converting them into six points.
The Golden Lions seized control in the third quarter. Leading 45-35, UAPB closed the period on an 8-0 run, capped by a Bowen basket, to take its largest lead at 53-35 heading into the fourth. UAPB scored 16 of its 28 third-quarter points in the paint.
Alcorn State made a push in the final quarter, but the Golden Lions held firm to secure the four-point win. UAPB never trailed in the second half.
