UAPB Track & Field Starts Indoor Season Strong at Saluki Fast Start Invitational

CARBONDALE, IL. — The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff men's and women's track and field teams combined for five event victories and nine top-five finishes at the Saluki Fast Start Invitational at the SIU Recreation Center on Saturday, as the UAPB opened the 2019-20 indoor season on a high note.

"I got a chance to look at both teams today and I saw some things I liked and some events that we need to improve on," said UAPB head coach Christopher McCoy. "As the season begins, I believe that our performance will get better as the season progresses."

On the men's side, senior Rodney Griffin finished fourth in the 60m with a time of 6.97, and Clement Campbell Jr. finished sixth with a time of 7.02. In the 600m, senior Wade Garner finished first with a time of 120.54, followed by junior Akeem Marshall, who placed fourth with a time of 125.05, and senior Tyran Lyons rounded out in seventh place with a time of 126.53.


Sophomore Toshin Agbede took first place in the 3,000m with a time of 9:02.80 and senior, De'Andre Mighty finished third with a time of 9:36.57.  The Golden Lions also clinched first place in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:20.25.

In the field events, Clement placed first overall in the men's long jump competition with a distance of 7.35m.

On the women's side, the Lady Lions captured first and second place in the 600m with senior Camiya Knight finishing with a time of 1:37.27, followed by Ciara Thuston, who finished at 1:42.15 respectively. In the 800 meters, Je-Risa James finished second with a time of 2:21.11, and freshman Charissa Moore finished third in the mile final with a time of 5:53.58. In the 60m hurdles, sophomore Safiya John finished second with a time of 8.84, and junior Arjai Johnson finished seventh with a time of 9.26.

The Lady Lions placed second in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:52.66, and in the field events, John also placed third in the long jump with a leap of 5.51m.

Both teams will be back in action at the Arkansas Invitational on January 17, in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
