Pine Bluff, AR- With all the success the Golden Lions are having right now, the only other thing head coach
Monte Coleman could have wished for would have been an undefeated season. But with all that the Golden Lions have done so far, the goal of a SWAC championship is still on the horizon.
Last week the Golden Lions traveled to Baton Rouge, LA, to face the Jaguars of Southern University. With memories of last year's contest still fresh on the minds of both teams, the only thing the Golden Lions had on their minds was sending a message-- not only to the Jaguar nation, but also to the rest of the conference that the Golden Lions are for real.
After garnering a 50-21 victory, the Golden Lions welcomed all the accolades that come with such a performance. For starters, offensively, Ben Anderson (QB, R-SO, 6'3, 200) was selected as Box to Row's National Player of the Week.
Ladarius Eckwood (WR, R-JR, 6'1, 185) was selected as The Batchelor Pad's student/athlete of the week for the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Anderson passed for a game high 296 yards and one touchdown and rushed for another 82 yards and a score; Eckwood caught three passes for 131 yards and a touchdown to lead all receivers. His longest catch of the day came on 52- yard pitch and catch, for a touchdown, from Anderson in the second quarter of last week's ballgame.
Defensively, the accolades didn't stop either.
Bill Ross (LB, SR, 6'2, 240) received SWAC defensive player of the week honors, as well as sharing College Football Performance Award honors for the SWAC with teammate
Brandon Thurmond (DE, R-SR, 6'2, 260). Last week, Ross had nine tackles, five solo and four assisted (which brings his league- leading total to 74), one-and-a-half tackles for a loss, one forced fumble, one interception; which he returned 60 yards for a touchdown, and two pass break-ups. Thurmond had four tackles one solo and three assisted, two sacks, (which brings his league- leading total to 11), one-and-a-half tackles for a loss, one fumble recovery and one quarterback hurry.
With the win against Southern, that put UAPB in sole possession of first place in the SWAC's Western Division. Next on tap for the Golden Lions is a homecoming match-up against the Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State University on Saturday, October 27. The kick-off is set for 2:30 pm at Golden Lion Stadium.
