PINE BLUFF, Ark.- Point guard Laquisha Slaton's 21 points helped lead the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Lady Lions basketball team to a 112-63 victory over the Arkansas Stars on Saturday evening at H.O. Clemmons Arena.
The Lady Lions were able to capitalize on a strong defensive effort and some timely Stars miscues which lead to the blowout win at home.
“We were able to run the break extremely well tonight,” said UAPB Head Women's Basketball Coach Cary Shelton. “On the defensive side of the ball we were also able to take advantage of some turnovers and turn those into points on our end.”
2009 Southwestern Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year Shay Holmes added 10 points and 3 rebounds as she went 4-of-6 from the floor and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe.
“We're a very confident team going into non-conference play,” added Shelton. “In order for us to continue to have success we must play consistently and not give up too many points. We feel like we have the potential to be extremely competitive during the non-conference portion of our schedule.”
The Lady Lions will open their season on Friday, Nov. 13th as they travel to Starkville, Miss. for a game against SEC member Mississippi State.
