PINE BLUFF, Ark.- The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff softball team recently announced the signing of three softball athletes for the 2010-11 season.
Signing NCAA National Letters of Intent with the Lady Lions was shortstop Brandy Stacks of Dale, Texas; pitcher Alexandra Walter of Blaine, Washington and third baseman Sarah Woods of Kansas City, Missouri.
Stacks, a left-handed hitting standout at LockhartHigh School, hit .375 as a junior while leading her squad in stolen bases.
“Brandy was a lucky find for us,” second-year UAPB head coach Tim Munn admitted. “She kind of fell into our laps, but we're certainly glad she did. She is a very vocal, hard-working, blue-collar type player and she will definitely push for a starting position next fall.”
Walter, a 6-3 right-handed pitcher/first baseman who actually orally committed to the UAPB program as a sophomore, brings an impressive resume from the West coast. A four year varsity starter, she hit .546 this past season for LyndenChristianHigh School. Out of her 16 walks registered this past season, 14 of those were intentional passes.
“When I first saw Alexandra pitch as a sophomore in an elite showcase in Plano, Texas, I knew, even then, she could be a major difference maker in our conference,” Munn said. “Not only will she be able to provide valuable help from the pitcher's circle, but she will also be able to help us with her bat, too.”
Woods, a left-handed speedster, hit .474 and was 33 of 37 in stolen bases this past summer for her Kansas City Predators travel ball team. The Staley High standout has the chance to step right in and contribute immediately for the Lions next season, according to Munn.
“Sarah brings a lot of speed to the table,” Munn said. “She is easily one of the fastest players that we will have on the field next season. That's an ingredient that we didn't have much of the last several years, and her speed will enable us to do so many more things offensively.”
