HOUSTON – (March 11) - The University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Women's Basketball 2013-14 season ended today with a 83-81 heartbreaking loss to Grambling State in the opening round of the 2014 Southwestern Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament, here Tuesday morning at the Toyota Center.
UAPB opened the second half with a 17 -9 run as the Lady Lions tied the contest at 46-46 on a
Cassidy Wright three pointer with 12:49 left in the game.
The Lady Lions would go on to take a 55-48 lead with a 10:26 left in the game with a 9-2 run capped off by a Wright three pointer.
Jordan Mitchell-Harmel would tie the game at 59-59 with a pair of made free throws with 5:50 left in the contest, capping an 11-4 run by the Lady Tigers.
Joanna Miller would nail a pair of free throws with 41 seconds left in the contest to give the Lady Tigers a 75-69 lead.
The Lady Lions would then hit back-to-back three points to send the contest in overtime with a Wright three pointer at the 32 second mark, followed by a
Christina Lasane three pointer with 16.8 seconds left in the contest.
In overtime,
Carlisha Walker would give the Lady Lions an 81-80 lead as she made one of two free throws from the charity stripe with 1:22 left in the period.
GSU would retake the lead with a pair of free throws by Miller with 52 seconds left, giving the Lady Tigers an 82-81 lead. The Lady Tigers would get the win as Dennisha Chambers scored GSU's final point of the game with a made free throw with 30 seconds left in the contest for the 83-81 win.
UAPB finished the contest shooting 42.2 percent (27-of-64), whereas GSU shot 36.4 percent (24-of-66).
In the opening stanza, GSU built a 15-4 lead capped off by a Jaylan Bodiford jumper with 13:14 to go in the first.
The Lady Tigers would then extend their lead to 27-10 with a 12-4 run, capped off by a Chambers layup with 7:52 left in the period.
UAPB would close out the first half with a 17-10 as they went into the break trailing GSU 37-27 at the half.
The Lady Lions finished the first half shooting 29.6 percent (8-of-27), whereas GSU shot 34.2 percent (13-of-38).
UAPB (3-26) had three Lady Lions to finish in double-figures with Wright scoring a team 24 points as she went six-for-10 from behind the three point arc. Lasane also recorded a 20-plus point performance with 23 points, while
Destiny Ham chipped in 11.
Jazmyne Victorian led the Lady Lions on the boards with nine; while both
Marion Thompson and Lasane dished out a team high four assists each for UAPB.
GSU (11-19) was led by Miller as she scored a game high 27 points to lead all scorers with her scoring 14 of her 27 points from the free throw line. Chambers pumped in 19 points for the Lady Tigers, while Tyler Anderson finished with a double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds.
With the win, GSU advances to the quarterfinal round to face Texas Southern on Wednesday, March 12 at 10 a.m. at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.
