Barnard Caps off SWAC Championships with New Record

New Orleans, La- Despite starting off Friday under gloomy skies, Sunday's offering of the 2013 SWAC Outdoor championships brought out the best in the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Golden and Lady Lions Track teams.

“I'm very pleased with the performance we had, but there is room for improvement on the men's and women's side. We had some good performance's in the in the field events with Glyniece Payne, who was a walk-on, and Carlisha Walker”, said head coach Christopher McCoy.

Ninfa Barnard proved to be the woman of the day, by not only placing first in the 800 meters (2:15.16), 1500 meters (4:37.47) and the 5000 meters (17:50.38), in which she set a new SWAC outdoor record. Barnard was also honored by being the top female scorer for the entire meet with a tally of 30 points.

“We had a great performance by Ninfa, who won three events just like she did at the indoor championships”, added McCoy.

Jelicia Liddell, who competed in the women's heptathlon, finished fourth with a point total of 3699; finishing as high as second in the long jump portion of the heptathlon.

Justin Cooper, a freshmen 400 meter hurdler, came in a close fourth place in field loaded with upperclassmen. With him getting a new PR and moving himself up on the NCAA list the future is bright for that young man”, stated McCoy.

“We had a lot to prove and will be back next year. We were a young team on the men's side. It's hard to replace someone like Ninfa, but that's my goal and I will do it. We did good, we had some PR's and that's something to build on.”
